The Guangxi Power Transmission and Distribution Network Lightning Protection Engineering Technology Research Center (to be renamed as the Guangxi Power Equipment and System Safety Technology Innovation Center, hereinafter referred to as “the Center”) is an important component of the technological innovation system in the Guangxi power sector. The Center is led by Guangxi University and co-built by Nanning Chaofu Electrical Technology Company Limited, State Power Investment Corporation Limited Guangxi Electric Power Company Limited, Guangxi Power Grid Company Limited Nanning Power Supply Bureau, Guilin Electric Power Capacitor Company Limited, China Southern Power Grid Ultra High Voltage Transmission Company Electric Power Research Institute, Guilin Electrical Science Research Institute Company Limited, China Energy Engineering Group Guangxi Electric Power Design and Research Institute Company Limited, Guangxi Liuzhou Special Transformer Company Limited, Guangxi Dikai Technology Company Limited, and Guangxi Research Institute of Green and Low-Carbon Technology Company Limited.
In recent years, these co-construction units have optimized and integrated their scientific and technological resources, fully leveraging their respective strengths and advantages, achieving a number of high-level scientific research results, and cultivating a group of outstanding scientific and technological talents and teams. These efforts have laid a solid foundation for enhancing independent innovation capabilities and provided strategic, fundamental, and forward-looking knowledge reserves and technological support for the economic and social transformation and development of Guangxi and the entire nation.
The goals of the Center are to serve national major demands, extend its influence to ASEAN countries, support the national Belt and Road Initiative, and address new challenges brought by higher transmission voltage levels and the large-scale integration of new energy sources into Guangxi’s power grid. The Center focuses on solving major technical and industrial upgrading issues faced by the power industry in Guangxi and across the nation, training electrical engineering professionals, and contributing to the national economic development. The Center emphasizes the development and application of cutting-edge industrial technologies and key common technologies. It aims to strengthen applied basic research, collaboratively advance modern engineering and disruptive technological innovations, and create a comprehensive industrial technology platform. This platform will concentrate on gathering innovative resources, maintaining open organizational operations, and promoting a diversified governance structure.
The Center currently has 4 national-level talents, 6 provincial and ministerial-level talents, 30 personnel with doctoral degrees or above, and 27 senior professional title holders. In recent years, the Center has organized over 10 academic exchange activities and conferences. Under the leadership of Professor/Doctoral Supervisor Zhang Yi-yi, an outstanding expert in Guangxi and Director of the Center, it has gathered and cultivated a large number of innovative talent teams and elite forces in scientific and technological research. This effort provides talent assurance for the implementation of Guangxi’s innovation-driven development strategy in the electric power industry.
In recent years, the Center has published over 100 SCI papers, obtained more than 100 authorized invention patents, and transformed related technologies into over 100 products and technical services. It has also formulated 1 international standard, 5 national standards, and 12 industry standards. The Center has won numerous awards, including one national second-class science and technology award, one gold medal at the Geneva International Invention Exhibition, two first-class Guangxi Science and Technology Awards, and three second-class provincial and ministerial awards. Currently, the Center is supported by 1 national-level research platform and 5 provincial and ministerial-level research platforms to facilitate its development.
